I LIKED:
I really enjoyed the characters. Elizabeth did not care to be part of society - the ton. She did not want to have “a season,” and she found someone to love and marry without going through the parties. She did not care about clothes. She was happy to wear prior year styles. She loved to draw and paint. Hal had a speech problem. He spoke in phrases. He was brilliant in business - like a venture capitalist - finding projects to invest in and oversee. He was never interested in the many ladies his overbearing mother forced on him. His mother insulted him and demeaned him. He avoided her as much as possible.

The story begins with Elizabeth in mourning after her husband’s death. Hal comes to help manage her finances. I liked the plot and I liked the events that happened.

I DID NOT LIKE:
Several times after they see each other, they both have long, internal ponderings and doubts. She thinks he couldn’t possibly like me. He’s only doing this for this reason. He thinks she could never love me, she is only grateful for whatever reason. It was a downer reading these thoughts. It was excessive to create extra conflict. Let the story and personalities create conflict. Don’t spend all this time on inaccurate assumptions and doubts. And then they would act cold or avoid the other because of these assumptions. And it was worse after they had sex. Each believing the other couldn’t possibly ever love them. Ick. I wanted some happiness time together and can’t-wait-to-see-you-so-we-can-have-more-sex. We don’t get that.

I did not like the motivation for the sex scene. It didn’t feel right for her to initiate it. He was always respectful of her by controlling his desire. I’d rather see him lose some control. Instead it was like “ok if you really want this I’ll do it” – tepid.

A Most Unconventional Match Julia Justiss 9780373295050 Books Reviews

I have read A Wedding Gamble and Proper Wife - both are on my list of favorite Harlequin romances. This book is Sarah Wellingford's younger sister, Elizabeth, set about 8-9 years after Wedding Gamble, with Hal Waterman. I really enjoyed the first two books which really makes me more disappointed with this one.

Nothing happens in this book. There is very little action and almost everything is internal monologue. The two characters interact and then there are three pages of thoughts. I read half way through and then just skimmed the rest - reading the first line of each paragraph I didn't miss anything.

I was horribly frustrated with this book, the lack of action, the lack of true character development. If you pick this up expecting the quality and tension present in Wedding Gamble and Proper Wife, you will be disappointed.
I read many of the reviews and was immediately intrigued by the "affliction" of the Hero in this story.

This story is written so well-as described by one reviewer-you hardly notice Hal's chopped speach at all. The story has a certain softness in the building of the romance between Hal and Elizabeth. Very much like Jennifer Ashley's "The madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie" -with his aspergers. Only Hal has overcome a stutter-courtesy of his best friend Nicky, resulting in a kind of 'chopped' speech.

Hal is the epitomy of Quiet Hero-Intelligent, Strong, Honorable, protective, Possesive, handsome-roiling with emotions......-just a man of few words. "He only says the important ones anyway." according to Elizabeth's young son David.

Elizabeth is typical of Regency period young brides-naive and protected from the outside world by her now deceased husband. She is Nicky's wife Sarah's younger sister, whom Hal met and became totally enamored of 7 years ago at Nick and Sarah's wedding.

This tale smacks of sweetness, honor and propriety in immesurable proportions during Elizabeth's mourning period! Not the typical Erotic Romance -this LOVE story is all about just that! The story of two unconventionable people who fall in love during a most unconventionable time............

Don't just take my word for it..........read it for yourself!
An enjoyable read, and about what I expected as far as Harlequins go. Better than most, EXCEPT I felt that Hal's speech impediment could have been done differently. I do NOT have a problem with him HAVING a speech impediment, but I don't like the way it is dealt with, because I think the author was inconsistent. Hal leaves out pronouns and articles in one sentence, then follows it with another sentence where he does include them. I reiterate the fact that I have NO PROBLEM with the impediment itself (it actually makes him a very sympathic and sweetly vulnerable character), but I have never encountered anyone who deals with a speech impediment this way. The author makes him sound like a caricature of certain ethnic groups in old movies and books. I am SURE she did NOT mean to make him sound that way, but that's the way it read to me. I've actually read stories with stuttering heroes before and never felt that the hero's speech seemed ridiculous except with THIS book. I also agree with the reviewer who stated that the sex scene was WAY out of place/out of character for these two. I heartily agree. I have no problem with sex scenes in books, but they need to make sense in the story, and this one didn't. It felt like, "Oh no, we're getting to the end of the book! Shoot! I have to put a love scene in here before I marry them off!" It is a sweet, light story, though.
