4-4 1/2 stars. This story was definitely not what I expected, but I really enjoyed it. I was in the mood for a pnr, and since it was labeled a "Dragon Kings" book, I assumed it would be a "fated mates" type dragon-shifter story. Boy was I wrong. I would defintely consider it in the "darker" side. There was not really any "sunshine and cheery" moments, but rather a combination of a very intense and action-packed story line, with a decent romance. I thought the h was a great leading lady. She was super strong--both emotionally and physically. She did not always make the best decisions, but she learns from her mistakes, and grows from them. I wouldn't necessarily consider the H a "bad guy", but he is what he is, and does what he does to survive in the only environment he has ever known. When I first met him, his actions towards the h made me go back to the synopsis of the book to actually see if he was going to be the h's love interest. To be honest, I was very skeptical as to whether the author could pull this off to me as a believable romance, but she did. I feel there was a growth in both characters that really helped to build the foundation for a growing relationship. I thought the writing style was good, and had a good flow. However, I did find some parts confusing, like I was missing some information about this new world the author created. Not enough to detract from the total enjoyment, but just enough to make me wish for some answers.

Leto is a caged warrior, Nynn, a neophyte he must train. Wearing collars that contain their supernatural powers, they're prisoners of a corrupt old man and a sociopath scientist. Nynn fights to keep her son alive. Leto fights to take care of his family on the outside. But when they find each other, no cage can hold them or the passion they share.

This book was fantastic. Leto's transformation from fighting machine to a man with emotions was handled skillfully. Can't wait for the next in the series.
This was raw, dirty, gritty and dark. Nynn's husband is murdered, her son is kidnapped and she is thrown into a lab, then underground to fight in cage matches. Leto has grown up fighting in the cages and knowns no other life. Leto is Nynn's trainer, he is attracted to her but she hates his guts. A little slow in the begining for me, but once the action and emotional angst started it didn't let up until the end. Leto and Nynn don't understand each other, he doesn't know why she resists and she doesn't know why he has given up. I liked the characters and the dark world they lived in. The relationship was slow to build but it was believable considering their circumstances.
I liked the world building, and the characters were definitely interesting and complex. However I did have a funny feeling at times, like I was missing something, or that there was something I was supposed to know but didn’t? I can’t explain it. It helped that I read the silent warrior novella beforehand - I would definitely recommend doing that. I’m interested enough to read the next book.
This book was really different. I read it all in one sitting and just really enjoyed it. I loved the complexity of the characters. I even thought that the main male lead, who was deliberately portrayed as single minded in his devotion to what he considered his duty worked well because it gave us a starting point to witness his evolution and the blooming of his awareness in regards to his actual situation. The main heroine was similar, though she narrowed her complex world down into single minded focus as the book progressed. That made it unique, I think, and definitely worth reading. It's oddly beautiful how Lindsey Piper turned two evolutions, very opposite, and placed them on a merging path even though the evolutions were divergent in their singularity.
I started this book and could not stop until I finished it!

Audrey MacLaren is part of a demon race called the Dragon Kings. After being forced to live amongst humans, she builds a marriage and a home with a human named Caleb. Audrey conceives and delivers the first natural-born Dragon King and that fact alone makes her and her son, Jack, a target to quell a sadistic scientist's curiosity. During an experiment, she accidentally releases a blast of power changing her position from lab-rat to warrior in her jailer's eyes.

Leto Garnis is a Cage Warrior, his keeper's champion. He is tasked with training Audrey MacLaren into a warrior and is told that if he kept her alive for three matches, his jailers would see to the care of his ailing sister.

This story grabbed me by my hypothetical balls and kept me riveted. The story starts off with Audrey in a cell, spitting mad, and filthy. Leto approaches her cell and her instinct is to charge at him with a make-shift shiv, a strike to his face. Leto retaliates, sending her flying through the air and slamming into the ground. He has never met anyone like her. Rage, vengeance, and the will to escape and rescue her son commands her every move. His main goal is to train her to ensure his sister's care and although her defiance amuses him, it also stunts his progress in turning her into a successful warrior. One that will fight along side him with the same obedience and strength as he has done for over 20 years.

This book is brutal. the synopsis alone should tell you that the characters will fight in hand-to-hand combat. Gender be damned when it comes to the punches and blows that gets dished out in this story. The characters are so strong in this story, their physical strength and their prowess make each character a formidable one. I love how the main H/h's morals and stance on life switch half-way through the book allowing the main H/h to fully understand where each other is coming from. It made for a much more believable transition from trainer and student, as harsh as some of those scenes were, to lovers who cared and would die for each other. If you are someone who is sensitive to female characters getting beaten, then you may want to shy away from this read. However, the fact that regardless of all the brute strength and experience Leto has as a warrior, Audrey's intelligence, strength, and her determination to save her son makes you cheer for her rather than pity her.

This book was a pleasant surprise and I look forward to reading the next installment in this new series.
