Driven A Daughter Odyssey eBook Julie Heldman

I couldn't put down Driven, and traded a bit of sleep for it. Julie Heldman alternates exquisitely researched chapters about the history of pro tennis with stories about her own technical and psychological journey to the world's top 5. She's brutally honest and insightful about love lost (pun intended), the mindset of a champion, and her painfully complicated relationship with her mother, Virginia Slims founder/World Tennis publisher Gladys Heldman. The description of Gladys, a woman of contradictions, is a book within a book. Also illuminating is Julie's late-in-life bipolar diagnosis, which she bravely explores here in a way that few would have the guts to do. A public service. The few photos are great. My favorite was one of a teenage Martina wearing the same "You've Come a Long Way Baby" tee-shirt that I, too, rocked proudly as a member of the high school tennis team. Had this been strictly a tennis history I would have wanted to read it but not actually followed through. Interleaving the history within the story of a remarkable and fascinating woman--and her equally fascinating mother--made Driven a page turner.

Driven A Daughter Odyssey eBook Julie Heldman Reviews

Great Book,everyone should read it.
Nothing
I loved the book from the very beginning. I am not knowledgeable with regard to tennis, but the way the story is written made it feel like Julie was talking to me! I especially related to the struggles with her mother, as I have a very difficult mother and have experienced a very similar upbringing as Julie did. I know how that feels, I wish I could share stories with her regarding our moms.
If you have any interest in tennis history, or just want to read a fiery read, I strongly recommend Driven! It's precious to learn an insider's account of the origin of women's tennis, while finding out what it was like to play on the tour simultaneously -- good luck finding that combo anywhere else! Meanwhile, Julie courageously shares the full spectrum of her life, words that most confine to their journals. Rarely do authors write with such courage, passion, depth and truth. The book is written in a fast-paced style that is gripping within the first page, and expands into unexpected breadth. I can confidently say, you won't regret the purchase.
This is a great read. I very much enjoyed it from beginning to end. I’ve always loved tennis and began subscribing to World Tennis in the mid 70s. I’ve always thought I was well versed in open tennis history until reading this book. Julie goes into great detail about the beginnings of the open era and in particular the formation of the Virginia Slims tour, which her mother Gladys spearheaded. I had no idea how involved Gladys was before the open era and I really enjoyed learning about her previous endeavors, not to mention how sad her parenting skills were. Julie’s upbringing must have been very painful and she very courageously leaves it all on the page.
As the daughter of a domineering woman and a passive father I can really relate to Julie’s journey. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to overcome troubled relationships in their past as well as to understand bi-polar disorder.
Julie Heldman is straightforward, genuine and compelling in this fast moving, page-turning, historical account. This not an effort to extract sympathy or a pat on the back. It is an allegory of courage in the face of challenges of many types, on many levels, that applies those in all walks of life. Her ultimate victory over the dark obstacles that both drove her greatness and threatened her destruction is an inspiration to anyone who has feared defeat in the face of repeated adversity. A worthwhile, hopeful and unforgettable read!
