DECEPTION COVE is the second in the Rainshadow series and the eleventh book in the Harmony series. Rainshadow is a strange island on the earth colony of Harmony. Even though this book is a futuristic book, it really is a paranormal romantic suspense with an overlayer of a earth colony that allows Castle to change the rules that would apply to your normal earth bound book. The book is not science fiction in the classic sense. I think of the book as romantic suspense in another venue.

Alice North has a talent that allows her to appear to disappear. She has been hunted for a year by her dead husband's mother who blames Alice for his death. She has resorted to appearing in a magic show with her dust bunny companion Houdini. On the night that her magic show closes, she encounters Drake Sebastian who, because of his ex-girlfriend, is now day-blind and has to wear dark glasses to allow himself any vision at all.
The story begins with great suspicion between the main players. Because of the mysterious happenings on Rainshadow, the two join forces to discover what is happening on the island. The two almost immediately end up in a marriage of convenience (which is a type of legalized affair on Harmony) and spend their wedding night on Rainshadow trying to stay alive.

I liked Alice and Drake. They have a nice chemistry although there are more pages devoted to the mystery suspense angle of the story than the romance. I felt that this time the couple did get more attention than in the previous books about Rainshadow. Although the characters both have trust issues because of their previous relationships, there isn't much angst going on in this story.

I enjoyed the plot of this story because the twists were interesting and just when I thought the story was over there was an additional obstacle that has to be overcome before the ending. Once again, much of the humor of the story is provided by the dust bunnies. Houdini is really cute.

I'd rate this one a 4.25.

The book arrived in good shape and on time. I'm a fan of Jayne Ann Krentz, who writes as Jayne Castle for her futuristic novels. Rainshadow is an island on the planet Harmony. The people are colonists from Earth, who have been cut off from there for 200 years. Rainshadow is wild and tropical, with a large, protected Preserve owned by the Sebastian family. It is the center of geo-thermal and paranormal energies, which have grown to the point they're dangerous. It's thought that two paranormal crystals, hidden in the Preserve by an enemy, are the cause and have to be found. The grandson and granddaughter of the two founders of the Preserve have to team together to find the stones and the enemy. Both have been damaged by prior relationships, but they have an instant attraction and strong abilities with light. He's blind to daylight and only can see with the dark end of the spectrum. She bends light around herself or objects to appear invisible. She also has a "magician" dust bunny. There are exciting events, well portrayed, with sub-plots. She writes with vivid description, good plot, believable characters, and proper English grammar.
Once again Jayne Castle (Jayne Ann Krentz) has delivered an entertaining novel. Several months back she announced on her web site that she was no longer writing science fiction. I along with a host of other readers "cried out" in dismay and I like to think convinced her to reconsider! Therefore, I was totally delighted to find our favorite critters the dust bunnies (Houdini in this one) have returned to the scene.
Our heroine is a light talent who was temporarily out of her mind consented to a trial marriage with a scoundrel who was using her to get his way without benefit of a permanent or Covenant Marriage. Marriages of convenience carried none of the perks such as inheritance or social acceptance. When her temporary mate died while on honeymoon his mother was convinced that he had been killed by his bride. Mommie dearest then proceeded to make the surviving partner's life a living hell.
Jayne Castle has come through to save the day.

Dust Bunny fans will have already figured that the hero saves the day,and the evil is vanquished. The ONLY problem is we will have to wait for the next year's book to continue our neverending diet of wonderful Jayne.
Alice North is an light-talent and an orphan who never knew who her parents were, she also being stalked by her mother-in-law who blames her for the death of her son Fulton Whitcomb. Alice entered a MC contract with Fulton after refusing a full covenant marriage. Fulton tells her she is the grand-daughter of Nicholas North, who was a partner with Harry Sebastian and offers her the chance to find treasure from a map Nicholas created. The treasure is on Rainshadow island and he needs her light-shadow talent to find it.

For the past year she has been changing her identity and moving from place to place just trying to make a living. When her magic show is cancelled after one show she leaves the theatre with her dust bunny Houdini and is attacked by two men who threaten her with knives. Fortunately Alice's strong talent gives her the ability to bend light and make herself invisible. She is also saved when Drake Sebastian shows up and disables the hoods.

For the second time in a year Alice is offered a MC contract and a return to Rainshadow Island for her honeymoon. Drake knows she was there with Fulton Whitcomb and tells her that the crystals they removed have caused violent changes in the weather and the psychic fence around the Preserve, Drake belives Alice is the clue to recovering the crystals and wants her to return to Rainshadow with him.

This was one of the better Rainshadow stories. I liked the relationship between Alice and Drake, the action and the storyline. I always love the dust bunnies, Houdini is wonderful! Great read!
