They scheme to get him off to London or Paris to acquire some polish, hoping he'll lose the fustian jackets and baggy trousers for tight-fitting brocade waistcoats, lace-cuffed shirts, and tailored coats. Philip stays away a year and acquires more elegant style that anyone could have imagined. The results are piquant and charming, and our appreciation for Philip grows. Recommended.

I recently became a Georgette Heyer fan. I really love the large print books because I can enjoy the book without my reading glasses.
Classical Heyer. Either you love her as the best substitute for Jane Austin, or you enjoy it for what it is.
This Heyer is written a bit differently than her others. It is very straightforward which is rather refreshing. It starts like a fairy tale with three houses built, though not straw, sticks or bricks. What I liked was that the book was a story from the guys point of view. He is the one who transforms into something striking in front of a mirror. He thought he wouldn't like it but he did. It has plenty of sword fights, some serious and some funny. Lots of French dialogue which you can guess at fairly well. It was a good read.
Powder and Patch is an awesome romp through the Georgian period. Phillip Jettan is one of my favorite Heyeros ... Cleone is not my favorite at first (after all, she sends Phillip away and appears to favor the idiot Bancroft). But she does it partly because she wants him not to take her for granted. I think Phillip shows her he's not one to be taken for granted, either ... But his trip to France hones his personality and takes off the rough edges and he makes a lot of friends (sort of all's well that ends well). I wanted to see a second book matching up Sir Maurice with someone else. He's been a widower long enough.
I like most of Heyer's books but I don't care for this one because I didn't care for the hero. He became such a fop that I could barely stand him. The heroine was pretty unlikable as well. And there was way too much French in this English book. It did not forward the story but it rather chopped it up. And all the boring descriptions of makeup and fashion-and that was about the men's clothing! Maybe Heyer meant this as a satire but she did not succeed.
Georgette Heyer needs no introduction to her many fans. Her books are reminiscent of Jane Austen's but in a lighter vein. Powder and Patch is the perfect way to be introduced to her novels if she is a new author for you. She usually sets her novels in the Regency period, but sometimes she ventures into the previous era of powdered wigs and patches. Most of the stories here are set in the Georgian period but they are very much Heyer stories. Like Austen, she believes that an unmarried man, possessed of a good fortune, must be in needs of a wife. Or a young lady, if she is an heiress, must indeed pick and choose with care. The dialogue is witty and the situations are full of surprises and quick turns. The men are gallant (unless they are villainous) and the ladies can be charming, but also, like Elizabeth Bennett, possessed of good sense and intelligence.
I prefer a full length book, as it gives more scope for character development and twists to the plot. If you like this book, try Venetia or Sylvester or False Colours. All are witty and great reads.
I love, I adore, Heyer' s French-influenced males. The skirts, the lace, the fashion... the red-heeled pumps! *Squee!* Oh Philip! But honestly... Oh Maurice! He stole the show for me. But Philip was a darling. Cleone... meh. She is probably my least favorite of Heyer' s heroines. I detest those aggravating females who expect the males in their sphere to read their minds and pay attention to all the unuttered subtext to their ridiculous demands. I don't know why Philip persisted after her. But, he did and we the reader just have to cheer him along. Read this one for the male cast and for Aunt Sarah, who was hysterical in a completely languid way. Very very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
