This is a beautiful story about two young people who aren't sure where they belong. Hector, escaping a difficult home life, plans to hide out on the deserted Isle Royale in Lake Superior for the winter time, biding his time until he turns 18 and can legally be free of his uncle. On the supposedly deserted island, he finds Anda, who is there for an entirely different reason. Anda is only half human; she is a child of the Lake and a human father. While these two teens are totally different, they find they have more in common than one would expect. As their relationship develops, they face the challenges of surviving in an inhospitable wilderness and coming to terms with living in two different worlds. While technically a modern fantasy, this book is unlike any book I have read before and completely enjoyable! I highly recommend it!

Amazing story of love, adventure and sacrifice. Family dynamics and relationships bring out the best and the worst in us. Always a treat when an author sweeps you up into the book. Well done Dr. Kang!
This book was boring, predictable. Very disappointing. I did find her first book interesting but not this one.
Loved this book. Unique story entangling lake legends, the powerful forces of nature and the human experiences of emotion. Lydia King has become my favorite author after reading just two of her books. She is smart and so very well written. I look forward to reading more by this author.
Truly a beautiful story, one of sorrow and loss but ultimately of love. Kang captured the magic of Lake Superior with a stunning prose and vivid imagery. Absolutely loved!
I am about half way into this book and love the writing and the story. The characters chemistry has a great dynamic.
Great book with an interesting story. As a Michigander, I loved the take of the island and Lake Superior ships. This is meant for young adults, so it may not attract the attention of other adults like myself. Lydia Kang is a fantastic author and I have read several books by her. Book is cloaked in mystery, fantasy and where is this story going? Does take a couple of chapters to get into.
